David was arrested in Texas in 1982 after decades of substance abuse. It was his long history of drug use that led Dallas police to raid his changing room at a nightclub called Cardy’s. According to the Dallas Morning News, there were a number of police officers at the scene and David was free to base himself there. He was arrested for felony possession of cocaine. Police also found his .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun in his bag, which added to the charges against him.

David claimed he started carrying weapons after John Lennon was assassinated years ago. David ended up serving nine months in prison as a result of his arrest.

In a 2014 interview with the Dallas Morning News, David said his time in prison saved his life.

He added that going to jail “wasn’t a fun way to get off that train.” [of drug abuse], but it worked. It was actually a very difficult method, but it worked. ”

In fact, his time in prison was so effective that he ultimately thanked the judge who sentenced him to five years in prison.
