There are effective study strategies that are beneficial for textual learning, and PQ4R is one of them. It can be performed easily without too much effort. PQ4R stands for preview, question, read, reflect, recite and review.
Preview: Preview is taking a tour or survey of the learning material. For instance, a student is about to study a chapter he should take a look at the topics and sections of that whole chapter.
Question: After preview, develops questions for each section. For example, keeping this section in view makes the question, “What does PQ4R mean?”
Read: Now go through all the sections step by step and in a careful and meaningful manner. Answer the question that was constructed out of the headings.
Reflect: Now give a throe back to that material and try to relate material with any example. Try to reflect on the understandings from that material.
Recite: Recite one section at one time. Try to retrieve what you have learned and if you can’t recall a particular thing read to it again.
Review: Lastly, go through the whole material again. Try to answer the questions of each section and also recall the crux of that material.
Learn like teaching someone:
Educating some other person indulges you completely in the material. Try to teach the material to someone that you are learning. If there is no one around, you can teach the material to yourself by becoming your teacher. Teach yourself that material and imagine you are a student of your own.
The spacing effect means creating sessions. While preparing for an exam or learning any content creating sessions and between those sessions, building gaps can help in remembering information for a long time. For instance, if a student has an exam on Wednesday, he should start learning that material on Saturday. Make a session to go through that material again, and there should be a gap in those sessions. Regarding in such a way is also proved as among effective study strategies.
